After watching many TV adverts, I have decided to research further into confectionery adverts. This was decided upon as I think creating this sort of advert would be a challenge but it would also be fun to create. Additionally, this is such a wide topic which means that I have so many options open to me on what I can create. Furthermore when in discussion with my teacher we decided that I should create an advert on this type of product as viewers don't usually see many adverts of this sort being shown on TV at the same time. From previous posts on my blog I have gone into detail and broke down some of the adverts. For me to be able to notice the codes and conventions used, I am going to break it down into separate categories such as camera, editing, sound and mise en scene. This will then allow for me to clearly identify aspects of the advert, which I will then be able to take into consideration when I start the designing and creation process of my advert.
This advert starts of with a long shot of the two men and woman walking into the scene where there is already a man who seems to be in an office of some sort looking rather depressed. From his facial expressions it is clear to the audience that something isn't quite right. The diegetic voice of the women speaking instantly tells the audience what is wrong with him. Many mid shots have been used which allows for the audience to see all of the character facial expressions. One aspect of this advert which is clever is that both the man and women are wearing red tops. This is symbolic and also iconic as the originals skittles packaging is this colour which connotes that they might be working in the skittles factory office. The fact that when the man touches everything, it all turn into skittles could represent and portray to the audience that everything around him relates to skittles and that they are compulsory. A shot reverse shot sequence has been used to show the reactions of the man and then the man and the women. From this sequence the audience are able to tell that the women and man are happy and shocked about everything turning into skittles, whereas the man with the issue clearly isn't. This is portrayed through the sad emotion shown on his face as he looks up towards his friends.
The audience then here the diegetic sound of the phone ringing. Again this sound could connote that he works in an office. This is also portrayed by the other object surrounding him such as the computer and the files all in the background. The diegetic sound of the man speaking to the other man and women suggests that he knows that everything he touches will turn into skittles.
Towards the end of the advert the diegetic sound of all of the skittles falling to the ground as the man touches his desk reinforces the point that skittles are the new best thing you should have.
The end shot shows the audience the skittles packet and their logo and slogan. This is again similar to every other advert s far and is one of the conventions that they all have within the ending few seconds of the advert. By putting an image of their product with their logo and slogan on it will reinforce the to audience what product is being advertised on last time before the end of the advert.
Throughout the whole of this advert, neutral colours have been used. Neutral colours have been used so that the character stand out wearing the red tops and also so that when the man touches something the colours of the skittles stand out. As the skittles are the main point and purpose of this advert, this works well and is effective. This advert is quite unusual as when looking at many other TV adverts they haven't displayed their products in this way. By it being unusual it also helps it to stand out which would make it much easier for their target audience to remember. However when looking back over the advert is is effective as not many adverts have been shown on TV like this one before.
